Signal Type Lab
An interactive specimen site where variable fonts respond to sound.
Challenge
A type foundry needed their new variable typeface to sell itself. Static specimen pages show what a font looks like — they wanted people to feel what it could do.
Approach
I mapped the font's weight and width axes to live audio input and cursor energy, rendering glyph outlines through a custom WebGL pipeline so ten thousand glyph instances stay at 60fps while they dance.
Result
The specimen became the foundry's launch centerpiece, drove a 6x spike in trial downloads in the first month, and circulated widely across design Twitter and typography newsletters.
